HEALTHY FATS: It is rarely talked about, Epishield Plus but did you know that nearly all fats that naturally occur in whole foods are beneficial to our bodies. Research has begun to reveal that simple carbohydrates and not fats are often the villain in our diets. Quick digesting carbohydrates, like those found in white breads, white rice, white pasta and cakes and cookies, are more often responsible for many of our current epidemic illnesses, e.g. obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Even the much maligned saturated fats can be beneficial; they make up part of our cell membranes and are necessary for hormone synthesis. And oils, including saturated fats, actually help us to feel satiated and work to balance our blood sugars. Fat has also been found to help to lower inflammation, a leading cause of many chronic illnesses. It is the imbalance in our fat intake, too many omega-6's (found in meats and vegetable oils) and too few omega-3's (found in fish, nuts and flax seeds). Omega-3's are also touted for improving our moods and overall brain function because these fatty acids make up 20 percent of our brain's grey matter.
CUT DOWN ON GRAINS: This can be confusing because we have often been told that grains are healthy because they contain fiber and many minor and major nutrients. However, it depends which types of grains you choose. Whole grains, such as quinoa, millet, buckwheat, and amaranth are filled with phytonutrients and are high in fiber. But the grains that we are most familiar with, the types of grains served in most restaurants and purchased at most supermarkets, are actually nutritionally deficient. It is not enough to just switch from white flour to whole grain flour. What is essential for our health is to benefit from the whole grain itself, not the end product that is created in the whole grain flour and made into whole grain breads and pasta.
